Eating and Other Adventures

We've now officially branched out into solids. Rice cereal (tasty), apples (not a huge favorite but she eats them anyway) and bananas (which she squeals about while eating them she likes them so much). As soon as I can find some ripe avocados we'll give those a whirl (isn't there some trick to ripen them if they're not already ripe?). Except for the rice cereal, I'm making her food so far. Fresh fruits and vegetables are SO CHEAP here compared to the States, and she's only eating solid food like twice a day, so it's very easy right now. We'll see if I keep it up once we're in the states this summer . . . baby food in a jar is quite a bit more expensive here and since the fresh stuff is affordable I feel good about giving that to her. No preservatives, you know. Then I ask myself if I should be trying to use organic produce. The danger of blogging and being able to be so connected to others, for me, is that I have that many more people to compare myself to. I know I shouldn't, but when I read about this person who doesn't eat sugar or flour, and that mom who kept her kids vegetarian until they were four years old, and this other mom who made all of her own baby foods out of only organic stuff I just get overwhelmed and think, is that really a battle that I want to try to fight? Give me some feedback and tell me what you did and why . . . and enjoy the pics and video!

  1. You are right too much information and opinion sometimes. I wanted to make all my own baby food, but God gave us such an active baby (a short napper too) that by bedtime the LAST thing I wanted to do was boil veggies. Thankfully, b/c of the US gov't and the WIC program we qualified for free jarred fruits and veggies. Another help was/is that Chloe HATES pureed foods. She almost skipped them all together. If you pay attention to you needs and Mayas you will do great. Also, our parents fed us crazy stuff and we are ok.

  2. I can say it in 1 word: RELAX! The God Who leads you through every other area of life is leading you in this one too. He loves her more than you and He will give you the right instincts for her. Can't wait to see her in person!

  3. I think to get avocados to ripen you are supposed to put them in a brown paper bag with an apple or something....but then where can you get a brown paper bag here? Hmm, wonder if a painted/dyed department store bag would work?

  4. Yup, relaxing is good. But if you want to know MORE info, www.foodnews.org is a great resource. They track the "dirty dozen" and the "clean fifteen" as far as the best and worst (in terms of pesticides) of NON-organic produce. I try to stay away from the dirty dozen.

  5. Kellie -
It is so hard when the comparison starts!! I can remember feelings of icky when someones baby did something faster/better than my baby!

I will tell you what I did with my kids - just because you asked! All kids are different and YOU know what your daughter needs better than anyone! I love how God gave us the ability to 'get' our kids so early on!

We waited until 6 months then started rice cereal. We then started with the orange/yellow foods - squash, pumpkin, carrots. Then moved to greens which mixing in some fruit.

I made my baby food - and did batches at a time and then froze it into ice cube trays (then when it was frozen take them out of the trays and store in a ziploc so you can reuse the trays). It worked great to make a whole lot of food in one day.

I ALWAYS had some jar baby food in my cabinet just for those moments I have to rush out the door for a meal. Can you imagine - a Chinese friend just showing up at your door uninvited and expecting you to drop everything and go out for who knows how long? hahaha!

We waited until the kids were about 1 to introduce meat, and they also didn't have juice until their 1st bdays. I just wanted them to learn to love water like mom!

That's about it! Not too complicated :) We can't get any fancier than that here and thats okay! When you are in the US - try to find a local farmers market, or coop produce group. It is the only way to get fresh stuff that we are used to living overseas!

    You have a precious daughter!!!
